The room matters more than the product
You don't sell to the user. You sell to the person with the budget. Different people, different problems. The user cares about the interface. The budget holder cares about risk, compliance and whether this decision makes them look smart or exposed.
Walk in thinking the product speaks for itself and you'll get eaten alive. Products don't get seats at tables. Relationships do.
Decisions happen before the meeting
By the time something reaches a formal decision point, it was already decided. In a hallway. Over coffee. A Teams call between two people who trust each other.
If you're making your case in the meeting, you've already lost. Meetings ratify decisions. They don't make them.
Speed scares people
Startups worship speed. Enterprise punishes it. Moving fast signals you haven't consulted the right stakeholders. Haven't thought through downstream impact. Haven't considered the twelve systems connected to the one you want to change.
I had to unlearn urgency. Not because it's wrong — because patience is a strategic weapon in this context. The people who last move deliberately, build consensus before they need it, never surprise anyone in a room with witnesses.
Politics is the operating system
Startup culture treats politics like a disease. In enterprise it's how everything actually works. Who influences whom. Whose budget's under pressure. Which exec is building a case for promotion.
The best operators I've worked with don't avoid it. They read the room better than anyone in it. They know when to push, when to wait and when to let someone else take credit so the thing actually ships.
Why this matters
The technology that runs this country — health, finance, government services — lives inside these organisations. If you want to build things that matter at real scale, you need to understand how these places actually operate. Not how you wish they did.
Builders who can move between both worlds are rare. That's where the leverage is.
